Vice Mayor Shirley Green Brown has been a resident of the City of Alachua since the 1970s and was employed 31 years with the Alachua County School Board.  She taught at Alachua Elementary School for 11 years and W.W. Irby Elementary School for 20 years.  Prior to her work for local schools, she was employed with the State of Florida for 7 years.  She retired as a Career-Speech and Language Pathologist in 2012.

Vice Mayor Brown has a passion for children and education. She has actively supported and volunteered with Alachua Recreation activities for years.  She served on the School Advisory Council for Irby Elementary, Alachua Elementary, Mebane Middle and Santa Fe High School.  She continues to be involved in education by tutoring students in the Alachua and Gainesville area.

Community Volunteer Affiliations: Former President and board member for Elder Options Board of Directors, Board member and Secretary of the Child Advocacy Center, Chair of the Alachua/Newnansville Subcommittee (ACCCRP), President of the Alachua Friends of the Library, Former President and member of the Alachua Woman's Club, Alachua Chamber member, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., member, Board member of Twenty Pearls Foundation, Inc - Mu Upsilon Omega Chapter, and member of St. Paul AME Church.

Vice Mayor Brown is married to Rev. John E. Brown, has one son (Marlon), daughter-in-law (Shanae) and two granddaughters (Savannah and Mya).
