Vice Mayor Shirley Green Brown has been a resident of the City of Alachua since the 1970’s and was employed 31 years with the Alachua County School Board. She taught at Alachua Elementary School for 11 years and W.W. Irby Elementary School for 20 years. Prior to her work for local schools, she was employed with the State of Florida for 7 years. She retired as a Career-Speech and Language Pathologist in 2012.
Vice Mayor Brown has supported and volunteered with Alachua recreation activities for years. She has served on the School Advisory Council for Irby Elementary, Alachua Elementary School, Mebane Middle School and Santa Fe High School. She continues to be involved with education by tutoring students in the Alachua and Gainesville area.
She is former President of the Friends of the Library, former President of the Alachua Woman’s Club. Commissioner Brown is the President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Mu Upsilon Omega Chapter, State of Florida Special Olympics Representative – FPAC and volunteer and is the Steward Board Pro Tem.
Vice Mayor Brown is a member of St. Luke AME Church where she is a church school teacher. She is married to John and has one son, Marlon and a daughter-in-law, Shanae and granddaughter Savannah.
