The city of Alachua will serve as the host site for the state of Florida’s first ever Babe Ruth Softball World Series beginning Aug. 7, 2010.  The Santa Fe Babe Ruth Softball organization is the hosting association for the national event and will welcome 10 teams from around the country to participate in the 12-Under World Series.  The games will be played at the Hal Brady Recreation Complex, located at 14300 NW 146th Terrace.

This is the second time the city of Alachua has hosted a World Series, with the first event occurring in 1992 when the Good Life Community held the Bambino World Series.  The 1992 event was the first time a baseball World Series was hosted in the state of Florida and the city is now making history with the first softball World Series in the state.

“Over a year of planning and preparations have been underway to host this national event,” said City Manager Traci Cain.  “We have made great improvements to our facilities and the community has donated tens of thousands of dollars to the Santa Fe Babe Ruth Softball organization to make this event possible.”

The opening ceremonies for the World Series will take place on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 8:30 a.m. where all 10 teams from around the nation will be introduced.  The first game of the event will begin at 10 a.m. and the teams will participate in pool play through Aug. 10.  The double-elimination tournament will begin on Aug 11 and the championship game will be held on Saturday, Aug. 14 at a time to be determined.

“We encourage everyone to take time out of their schedule and swing by the ball park to witness some great softball competition,” said Cain.  “We are proud to be a pioneer for the state of Florida by hosting the first ever Babe Ruth Softball World Series in the state’s history.”
