Compliance & Risk Management

E-mail Print PDF
The Office of Compliance is charged with the responsibility of enforcing the City of Alachua Code of Ordinances.  A Special Magistrate process is in place and violations are brought forward in a quasi judicial hearing where orders of compliance are entered when a violation is sustained.  Persons are given the opportunity to bring a property in compliance and a variety of possible actions are available to and including the imposition of a fine and the assessment of costs against a violator.

The Office also administers the Local Business Tax and enforces its provisions.  Violations are also brought before the Special Magistrate.

Certain Code of Ordinance violations can be prosecuted in the County Court but the City has chosen to avoid this more punitive and costly approach but retains the option in the event a special circumstance calls for such action.

The Compliance & Risk Management Director serves as the City Bargaining Representative and contract Administrator in relation to the City of Alachua Police Department/Fraternal Order of Police Collective Bargaining Agreement and is responsible for ensuring compliance with Article I Section 6 of the Florida Constitution and Chapter 447 of Florida Statutes.

The primary responsibility of the Office of Risk Management is to protect the public and employees from personal injury or damage to property from any foreseeable cause. Complete success is never possible but through education, training and effort we strive to succeed. Risk Management studies and evaluates risk and attempts to determine the best package of insurance coverage possible, at the most fair and equitable cost. Claims on behalf of and those against the City are processed and the efforts of City Staff are coordinated in relationships with insurance carriers, attorneys and any other parties in these complex issues.
