Alachua hosts several holiday events in December

November 16, 2009 - Alachua is home to dozens of special events every year with several upcoming in December.  The City of Alachua will be holding a Tree Lighting ceremony and Santa visit to Alachua on Friday, December 4th at 6 p.m.  The Tree Lighting will take place directly in front of City Hall (15100 NW 142nd Ter.), followed by a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus on Main Street at the Alan Hitchcock Theatre Park.  Once the Tree Lighting ceremony is complete, Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive at City Hall and then ride down to the Alan Hitchcock Theatre Park where area youth can have their picture taken and receive a treat bag.  The combined events are scheduled from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

“As the year winds down, our residents have the opportunity to join in the spirit of the season and participate in this annual tradition,” said Interim City Manager Traci Cain.  “We encourage everyone to attend the Tree Lighting ceremony and then take their children to see Santa.”

The City of Alachua also partners with the Alachua Chamber of Commerce for the annual Alachua Christmas Parade.  The parade will be held on Saturday, December 12th on Main Street at 2 p.m. and the theme is “Sounds of Christmas.”  The Chamber is also holding Shop-Dine-Stroll on Main Street on December 11th and December 18th during the evening hours beginning at 6 p.m.  During Shop-Dine-Stroll, Main Street businesses will be open late and there will be musical entertainment, raffles and much more.  As with the Chamber, the City also partners with the Alachua Business League for special events during the year such as the Harvest Festival and Spring Festival, among others.

“It’s wonderful to see our beautiful Main Street lined with residents taking in the sights and sounds of the parade,” explained Cain.  “We invite everyone to come out and enjoy themselves right here in Alachua.  Shop-Dine-Stroll is back again this year and provides an economic stimulus to our Main Street businesses as well as a great time for residents and visitors alike."
