Water and Wastewater Rates Adjustments

E-mail Print PDF
The City of Alachua adjusted its rates for water and wastewater utility services effective May 1, 2010.  Public hearings were conducted by the City Commission on March 22, 2010 and April 12, 2010 to adopt these rates.  Prior to the rate adjustments, the City noticed the public hearings in a local newspaper on April 1, 2010 and April 8, 2010, on the City’s website, at City Hall, at the Alachua Post Office and at the Alachua Public Library.  However, an additional notice of the public hearing should have been included in the City’s utility billing process prior to any rate increase.

Therefore, the City will be applying adjustments to customers’ accounts for rate differences during the months of May, June and July.  The adjustments will be reflected on customers’ next utility bills.

The City is scheduling public hearings on August 9, 2010 and August 23, 2010 to consider adoption of the new water and wastewater rates.  The City will ensure all public hearing notices are properly issued for the proposed rate increases.

City Manager Traci Cain stated that, “Once the City discovered the issue, it immediately took corrective action.”

E-mail Print PDF

The first public hearing on the Codification of the City of Alachua's Ordinances was held at the June 28th City Commission Meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the James A. Lewis Commission Chambers, City Hall.  Public hearings have been scheduled for July 26th and August 9th.  An enabling Ordinance will be required to adopt the new Code in its entirety.  The Code covers Ordinances that are subject to codification and adopted by the Commission through April 12, 2010.  Subsequent Code revisions will be done by way of an annual supplement service.

The Proof is presented in an underline and strikethrough text version, so that you can easily follow the process and determine what text is being added and/or deleted as we complete this project.  For the second public hearing, the Code will be presented in final form without underline and strikethrough text.  Copies of this background material are available to the public HERE, as well as the public library and Clerk's office.

In response to the public hearing discussions on June 28th and in preparation for the July 26th public hearing, City Manager Traci Cain has provided additional guidance HERE to be used when reviewing the Proof.

At the July 26th City Commission meeting, the Commission voted 5-0 to defer the public hearing on the codification of the City of Alachua's Ordinances.  This item has been rescheduled for public hearing and discussion at the September 13th and 27th City Commission meetings.  The back-up material that was supplied for the July 26th public hearing and will serve as support material for the September 13th public hearing is available HERE.

Alachua Police Department Goes High Tech to Search for Missing Children

E-mail Print PDF
Alachua, Fl — The Alachua Police Department has formalized an agreement with the A Child Is Missing Alert Program that has led to a high tech method now in place to search locally for missing children, missing elderly (often with Alzheimer’s), college students, and missing persons who may be mentally or physically challenged or disabled.

Effective April 9th 2010, upon receipt of missing persons call, the Alachua Police Department will make its first phone call to a toll-free number that rings in Fort Lauderdale, Florida—the national headquarters of the A Child Is Missing Alert Program.  The call, answered 24/7/365 by an Information and Mapping Technician, initiates a rapid process of information gathering and use of sophisticated mapping systems.  A Child Is Missing then launches potentially thousands of calls within minutes with an alert message detailing the missing person’s description, last known whereabouts, and pertinent information.  This alert message will also include an Alachua Police Department phone number for use by anyone with information relating to the missing person.
